The 2010 Fall Season is almost upon us! Official practices start in two weeks! The season will start 2 or 3 weeks after that! What can we do to prepare for this calamity?
To start with, how about a party? At the beginning of the summer Amy Taylor Jones offered to host a pre-season party to let the boys and their parents get to know each other, which I think is a great idea. I’ve heard she hosted a great party after the last season, so it should be a lot of fun for the boys and a good chance for us to meet to discuss upcoming issues and my philosophy for the season. Amy and family are out of town until the 10th of August, so we had discussed the idea of having the party the following weekend.
And how about a scrimmage, as well? One of the other U10 Express teams has arranged a scrimmage with one of the Houstonians 01 teams, and the Houstonians trainer has invited us to play them, as well. I think it would be a great idea, and to combine it with the party might be a lot of fun; play a tough game then follow it up with a refreshing pool party — who could ask for anything more?
Houstonians are a very strong team, both in technical ability on the ball and tactical know-how. I am hoping to arrange this scrimmage (which will be refereed) in such a way that the boys play 4 10-minute quarters, rather than 2 25-minute halves. This will give them a bit more opportunity to stay well-hydrated, as well as give me a chance to discuss tactical issues from the game while the incidents are still fresh in their minds.
Finally, there is the possibility of a tournament. Tournaments are a whole other kettle of fish which I will discuss in a future post, either later today or tomorrow.
So, what do you think of the party and/or scrimmage ideas? Please let me know by voting in the two polls you will see on the left-hand column, and by commenting below to expand any thoughts, express concerns, or offer suggestions or alternatives.
